Home Improvement and Renovations
Permits are generally required for home improvement projects to ensure safe construction and to mitigate unwanted or unforeseen impacts as a result of unsafe construction. If you are a resident and would like more information on a home improvement project—whether it is a simple improvement or a major renovation—this page provides you with information and additional resources on how to obtain City approvals and permits.
Various home improvement and renovation projects require approvals and/or permits.
This includes installation and/or replacement of:
- Air conditioners
- Air filters
- Dishwashers
- Driveways or walkways
- Electrical changes (e.g. light fixtures, service panel upgrades, electric vehicle charging stations, etc.)
- Landscaping
- Plumbing changes (e.g. re-pipe, water heater, etc.)
- Pools/Spas (including demolition)
- Roofing
- Solar panel systems
- Sprinkler systems
- Exterior paint/stucco (Planning approval only)
Permits are also required for the construction or addition of new:
- Block walls
- Driveways/walkways
- Fences
- Home additions (e.g. additional rooms, new second floor, etc.)
- Patios
- Wood siding
- Windows/doors

Staff will discuss your project with you and assist with the application and submittal process.
Hours of Construction
Please note that all construction, demolition, and/or grading activities shall be limited to the following days and hours, unless otherwise approved in writing by the City of Cerritos:
- Monday through Friday: Between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.
- Saturday: Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
- Sundays and City-observed holidays: No construction, demolition or grading activities are permitted.
